When Mr & Mrs Squire approached RGP Architects, they had a vision of a stunning feature Restaurant & Bar that would cater for both local residents as well as the hundreds of tourists who visit the North Devon coast every summer. They appointed the company as they have a policy of employing local professionals and were already familiar with RGP Architects’ work.
RGP Architects had to completely gut the building and remodel and extend it. The former Banking Hall provided a clear spacious area which naturally suited the Bar area and retained many of the original features. The Restaurant was to be sited in what was the offices and former adjacent shops. The original access however was not suitable for the new layout and a new access was formed to provide a level entry into the building, leading centrally between the Bar and the ground floor Restaurant. This allowed patrons to be aware of both functionalities of the building and created an ambience that flowed across both areas.
Opposite the entrance, a new feature staircase was created, providing access to the first floor Restaurant and Terrace.
