When under-utilised land was reviewed, Tarka Homes felt they could provide a far more practical solution for affordable housing with parking. Before work could begin existing tenants, surrounding neighbours and the Local Authority were consulted on the scheme to replan this site more efficiently. Whilst some existing tenants wished to remain in the estate in flats, others were happy to relocate or to occupy a new house on the site. These requests were accommodated and results in a scheme which reflects tenants’ needs and helps to enhance the surrounding estate.
During the work, RGP Architects ensured that the dwellings reflected similar features which were already present in the wider estate context. The features on the new properties, however, are utilised ina more modern and efficient manner; for example, the use of Cedral boarding in an energetic colour creates very strong architectural features, but also enables the construction of difficult junction details to be built economically and in accordance with current best building practices.
